PRESS RELEASE FULL SPEED AHEAD – A Regional Sustainable Materials Management ConferenceThe Northeast Recycling Council’s Spring 2017 Conference is just around the corner, and when it arrives it will address some of today’s most critical issues concerning sustainable materials management. Attendees and exhibitors from the US and Canada will gather at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel in Burlington, Vermont, on March 15-16, to participate in presentations focusing on strategies for surmounting current barriers to diverting more materials from disposal. Full Speed Ahead is the theme for NERC’s Conference. The Conference will open with introductory remarks from Julie Moore, Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. Following Ms. Moore will be Keynote Speaker Bridget Croke of the Closed Loop Fund, which seeks to provide funding to increase the diversion of recyclables from waste streams. Ms. Croke will talk about the importance of partnerships for achieving sustainable materials management goals. The Conference will continue with Derrick Lawrence of Seventh Generation, Sarah Reeves of Chittenden VT Solid Waste District, Alex Danovitch of Eureka Recycling, and Rhodes Yepsen of Biodegradable Products Institute, who will discuss the impacts of packaging changes on recycling and composting systems. Another noteworthy session will feature Cynthia Mitchell of MSW Consultants, Joanne Shafer of Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority, Janice Paré of Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, Lisa Wolff of ecomaine, and Jennifer A. Heaton-Jones of Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority, who will present strategies on battling the contamination issues that threaten the value of recycled commodities. On Day Two of the Conference, a session with Ann Fordock of OCRRA and Cindy Jessop of Sunnking, Inc. will address successfully developing contracts that are flexible enough to account for shifting material markets. The session will be followed by Lisa Skumatz, Principal of Skumatz Economic Research Associates, Susan Edwards of Eunomia, and Jo-Anne St. Godard of the Recycling Council of Ontario discussing next steps that high performing communities can take to improve further their sustainable materials management.
