Industry stakeholders will be gathering to discuss priority areas such as program goals and performance measures, product scope, recycler standards, cross border regulation of recyclers, data reporting and collector best practices.

Now that 25 states have some type of electronics recycling legislation, many stakeholders in the industry are looking for ways to harmonize the patchwork of state programs, which all have varying rules and regulations. The Electronics Recycling Coordination Clearinghouse (ERCC), a membership organization consisting of states that have passed electronics recycling laws as well as manufacturers, recyclers and other impacted stakeholders, has been looking at the issue of harmonization since its formation in January of 2010. An ERCC workshop held before The 2010 E-Scrap Conference, which was attended by almost 50 individuals, featured a prioritization exercise that identified the biggest challenges for stakeholders and program managers due to the differing state laws. Some of the challenges determined to be priority areas were: program goals and performance measures, product scope, recycler standards, cross border regulation of recyclers, data reporting, and collector best practices.

As a follow-up to the very successful 2010 workshop, the ERCC will hold a workshop in conjunction once again with The E-Scrap Conference in Orlando, Florida. It will take place Tuesday, October 4, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Omni Orlando Resort at Champions Gate. The workshop is entitled “Solutions for Harmonization of State E-Scrap Program Laws” and will focus on developing a series of actions to address the priority challenges identified in last year’s workshop. The result will be the development a Harmonization Work Plan with key actions to the take place over the next twelve months.

The pre-E-Scrap conference workshop is open to all managers of state and local electronics recycling programs, electronics manufacturers, retailers, recyclers, and other stakeholders. Registration for the workshop is free for ERCC members, $100 for non-members, and $50 for those with government or non-profit status. Fees can be paid as a part of the E-Scrap registration process. To register for the E-Scrap conference and the ERCC’s workshop, go to http://www.e-scrapconference.com, contact Jef Drawbaugh at jef(at)resource-recycling(dot)com, or call 503-233-1305, extension 118.

The ERCC is managed by the National Center for Electronics Recycling (NCER) and administered by the Northeast Recycling Council (NERC). For more information on the ERCC or to become a member of the organization, please call 304-699-1008 or visit http://www.ecycleclearinghouse.org.
