Recycling and resuse create a $35 billion annual industry in Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania, according to a Northeast Recycling Council (Brattleboro, Vermont) study. The study finds that more than 11,000 recycling and reuse businesses employ more than 100,000 individuals in the five-state region and pay them combined wages that exceed $4.2 billion. Recycling operations in the five states also save the energy required to power nearly 2 million households and eliminate 6.4 million tons of greenhouse-gas emissions, NERC says.
