State News

Massachusetts

  • Recycle Smart MA’s May 2023 Newsletter answers one of our most frequently asked questions, “Which numbers can I recycle?”. In Recycling’s “Magic” Numbers, they explore the history of the little numbers (aka the resin identification code) located on the bottom of plastic containers. They explain the genesis of the resin identification code, what the symbol means, why it confuses us, and how it came to be so ubiquitous. They also explain that the symbol is NOT a good indicator of recyclability. If you’ve ever been asked what the numbers mean and you need a reference, click here to read the latest newsletter and feel free to share!
  • MassDEP Awards Grants to Support Collection of New Waste Ban Materials: The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has awarded $1.1 million in grants to 19 Massachusetts organizations as part of the Commonwealth’s Recycling and Reuse Business Development Grant (RBDG) program. This grant round has been devoted to enhancing the collection of materials that were newly banned from disposal in November 2022 under MassDEP’s regulations-including mattresses and textiles and lowering the threshold of the state’s existing commercial food waste disposal ban from 1 ton to a half-ton per week. Additional information can be found here.
  • MassDEP Schedules Next Deconstruction Workgroup Meeting on June 7, 2023: MassDEP released its first Reduce & Reuse Action Plan in December 2021, and through numerous stakeholder meetings, identified Building Materials as a priority stream for Reuse.  This led to the development of the Deconstruction Workgroup, led by a planning team that represents industry, nonprofit organizations, and officials from federal, state, and local government. The next virtual meeting of the MA Deconstruction Workgroup is scheduled for June 7, 2023, from 1:30-3:30 EST and will focus on "Climate, Culture & Community: How Reusing Buildings Preserves Historic Spaces and Lowers Our Carbon Footprint". Please contact Kathi Mirza at MassDEP if you have questions.
  • MassDEP Sustainable Material Recovery Program (SMRP) Grant Applications
MassDEP has opened its annual Sustainable Material Recovery Program (SMRP) Grant Applications for municipalities and regional entities in Massachusetts. This year, the program is offering funding for seven categories including: mattress recycling containers, pay-as-you-throw program assistance, food waste collection carts, mercury collection sheds, regional small-scale initiatives, recycling dividends program (RDP), and the establishment of a permanent household hazardous waste collection facility. The RDP grant is MassDEP’s flagship program and provides payments to municipalities that have implemented specific programs and policies proven to maximize reuse, recycling, and waste reduction. Additional information on the application process, eligibility criteria, and funding categories can be found on their website.

OTHER News

JASON has a unique partnership with the Institute for Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) that spreads the recycling message to youth while also inspiring America’s students to think about careers in the scrap and recycling industry, and give them the scientific and technical background that such jobs require. ISRI provides educators with a guide to recycling that includes lesson plans, hands-on activities, and interactive web-based experiences; all focused on the importance of recycling and the scrap industry. Throughout this experience, students will acquire a deep, practical understanding of what recycling is and the important role of the scrap industry, gain insights into the life cycle for each commodity, engage in community activities that enhance their understanding of the environmental benefits of recycling, and build teamwork and problem-solving skills through a series of interactive lessons.
