NYC School Requests Merchandise for Recycling Awareness

Does your organization have reusable/recyclable merchandise such as pencils, pens, tote bags, and water bottles that you would be willing to donate to an NYC school for recycling awareness? Students part of the Science and Engineering Research Program at Staten Island Technical High School are studying quality of life for a research project and want to improve recycling throughout local high schools. They wish to hold an event for recycling awareness at their school. If you would like to donate merchandise, please reach out to Tiffany Brekher at tiffanyb156@nycstudents.net.

Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) Call for Expression of Interest

Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ), now the Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) responsible for developing, implementing, and financially supporting the modernization of curbside recycling in the name of producers, has launched a call for expression of interest for the conditioning and recycling of curbside recycling materials. Who is this for? Conditioners, recyclers, carriers of conditioning or recycling technologies and any physical or legal entity capable of bringing existing or future solutions for the conditioning or recycling of curbside recycling materials (containers, packaging, and printed materials) under the responsibility of ÉEQ. The call for interest is not open to brokers, market intermediaries or to transporters. This call for interest serves as the first step for an upcoming qualification process, if necessary, or a call for tenders, to build commercial relationships with ÉEQ. With the full entry into force of the modernization of curbside recycling starting January 1st, 2025, ÉEQ will have full responsibility over the curbside recycling system. Learn more here.

  • Mass DEP is hiring for two positions:
  • MassDEP Posts Updated Waste Characterization Data: Municipal waste combustors that participate in the Massachusetts Class II Recycling Program (this includes all five active municipal waste combustion facilities in Massachusetts) must complete a waste characterization study consistent with guidance issued by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) every three years. These reports focus on the composition of municipal solid waste – regular trash disposed of by residents, businesses, and institutions. A summary analysis of the 2022 studies and the data from all five study years is available at https://www.mass.gov/doc/summary-of-waste-combustor-class-ii-recycling-program-waste-characterization-studies/download. The full waste characterization study report for each of the five facilities is posted on MassDEP’s web page for each facility at https://www.mass.gov/guides/municipal-waste-combustors.
  • Recycle Smart MA issued two plastics-related newsletters in recent months. The first, TheTruth About Plastics Recycling, provided a response to recent news reports that plastics recycling is a “dead end.” This piece received a lot of positive feedback from RSMA followers and industry pros. We hope it will be useful to you as you respond to queries about the futility of recycling. The second, All About Plastic, addresses the confusion about which plastics can go in the recycling and which can’t. If you get questions about why only certain types of plastics are accepted and how those decisions are made, this newsletter may be of help. Included in the All About Plastic piece is a link to a short video tour of a MRF that explains the sorting and baling process. The video, a Reel created for Facebook and Instagram, is easily shared if you use social media or want to link to it in your own newsletters.
