The Compost Story

April 25, 2017

Last week’s blog introduced International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), a comprehensive educational initiative celebrated annually in the US and countries around the world during the first full week of May. This week I invite you to join the Compost Challenge!

Kiss the Ground, an environmental nonprofit organization, has a message: “We can balance the climate and feed the world by building healthy soil.” The organization's founders started by creating a garden for their community in Venice, California. Then they partnered with Louis Fox (“The Story of Stuff”) to create The Soil Story. The organization continues to work on media, education, and curriculum development. Now it focuses on supporting farmers to build healthy soil everywhere.ICAWthesoilstory

The Soil Story is a fabulous video which uses science to explore and explain the many important and vital benefits of soil.

The Compost Story is Kiss the Ground’s latest production. In this soon to be released video, compost is the “star.” As the producers say, compost is “One of nature’s most astonishing processes…and, it has been undervalued for far too long!” According to Kiss the Ground, the video will explain how compost is a “regenerating, probiotic, solution for our depleted land, and could play a major role in rebalancing the world’s carbon cycle.”

In honor of International Compost Awareness Week, Kiss the Ground has announced The Compost Challenge. It’s easy; just make a pledge to compost, use compost, and/or spread the word about the value of composting and using compost.
