Green Travel

March 7, 2017

Today’s blog offers another article in NERC’s occasional Travel Blog series. Having just returned from Florida, I’m happy to say that the warm sunshine was fabulous, Disney World still recycles, and alligators are really cool looking.

Those of you in the biz for a while may remember the 1997 National Recycling Congress which took place in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. One of the best tours I’ve ever joined was of Walt Disney World’s waste management facilities. The behind the scenes look at Disney’s trash removal, recycling, and composting was awesome!

Fl EpcotRecycling, food recovery, and composting still happen at the Disney World complex. Twenty commodities are collected for recycling at the Resort, including plastic bottles and aluminum cans, glass bottles, cardboard, paper, plastics, green waste, and metal and construction debris. Food scraps at nearly 60 Resort restaurants are collected for use as animal feed.

In 2014, food scraps and used cooking oils and grease from restaurants, area hotels and food processors began being diverted to an anaerobic digestion facility operated by Harvest Power. The food scraps are mixed with biosolids to produce biogas, a mix of methane and carbon dioxide. The biogas is combusted in generators to make electricity.

FL Home rm binsOne of the greenest hotel experiences I’ve had occurred at my stay at the Home2 Suites by Hilton in Gainesville. Recycling bins were prominent around the hotel and the rooms. Their sustainability message was displayed in multiple locations around the hotel as well, including the breakfast dining area. And, unlike most hotels offering complementary fl Home lobbycontinental breakfast, Home2 provided reusable dishware.
