Reuse for Different Purposes

June 24, 2014

Finding reusable items for different purposes is getting easier everyday.  There are many places to find the items you need.  Here are just a few…

Reuse for the Workplace

Offices, manufacturers, universities, libraries, non-profits, and government in the Northeast may need to get rid of items they don’t need, or to find used items at a reduced cost or for free.  They have the option to post their available or wanted items on the Reuse Marketplace—a free website for trading reusable items and keeping valuable materials out of the waste stream.  Although only businesses, institutions, non-profits, or government can post items on the site, anyone can browse and find the items they are looking for.

On the Reuse Marketplace, reuse has happened between a university and a farmer, among non-profits, with schools and residents, between businesses and residents, and  between businesses.  It might also work for you!

Reuse for Fun!

Whether you’re a teacher looking for art supplies, someone interested in learning a new craft, or an artist searching for her/his next media to work with, Creative Reuse Centers might work for you.

A Creative Reuse Center (CRC) is oftentimes referred to as a store, a warehouse, a gallery, and a studio. CRCs collect, organize, and sell reusable items for creative use.  There are more than 120 CRCs in 35 US states and in DC. They also exist in other countries—Britain, Indonesia, New Zealand, etc. Some were first formed more than 40 years ago, while others are new.

The one thing that CRCs all have in common is that they keep reusable items that others don’t want out of the waste stream.  Some of the items you may find at the Centers are material scraps, jars full of buttons, miscellaneous jewelry, photographic slides, different kinds of paper, business seconds, and other cool stuff.  The fun part of browsing through a CRC is looking at everything they have and figuring out ways you may be able to use or put the pieces together to create something new.  If you’d rather someone else show you what can be made, CRCs also hold classes or workshops so you can learn from someone who’s done it before.
