Something a Little Different…Amazing Scrap Sculptures

June 3, 2014

South Dakota sculptor John Lopez creates one-of-a-kind sculptures out of scrap metal (aka found objects).

The 43-year-old artist from Lemmon, South Dakota, creates full-size scrap-iron representations of a wide-range of “life-size” animals, including a horse, buffalo, and even a cowboy atop a triceratops. The artist welds his sculptures from scrap iron and other metals he salvages from abandoned farm machinery collected from local ranchers and farmers.  The artist says it can take five months to several years to create one sculpture.

Black Hawk

According to Mr. Lopez, the Black Hawk “is the one I am most proud of. The plough horse is a symbol worldwide that we all understand to be a part of our past and history. We depended on them so much before modern machinery was invented."

To see more of Mr. Lopez’s art, visit his Studio website; he also has a blog. For those of us living in the Northeast, the artist will soon have an installation in New Hampshire—the "Black Hawk" and his single bottom plow will be placed in front of a farmers market in the Kensington area.
