OPEN REVIEW PERIOD FOR DRAFT MODEL EPP SPECIFICATIONS

May 27, 2014

According to the US EPA “environmentally preferable” means “products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose.” This comparison applies to raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, use, reuse, operation, maintenance, and disposal.

The benefits of EPP include:

  • Improved ability to meet environmental goals
  • Improved worker safety and health
  • Reduced liabilities
  • Reduced health and disposal costs
  • Increased availability of environmentally preferable products in the marketplace

NERC received funding from the Roy A. Hunt Foundation to develop model environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) specifications for three common products that purchasers find challenging to buy “in green”—toner cartridges, copy and multipurpose 20 lb. paper, and office supplies. The draft specifications are now available for review.

Please email your comments, suggestions, and edits to Mary Ann Remolador, NERC's Assistant Director and Project Manager. The specifications will be finalized and posted on NERC's website by July 31, 2014.
