Product stewardship presents one wave of recycling’s future as an increasingly desirable way to manage a wide range of products, including: electronics, paints and other household hazardous materials, batteries, unwanted medications and medical sharps. Scott Cassel, Executive Director and Founder of the Product Stewardship Institute will present this keynote by addressing the factors leading to the abundance and acceptance of product stewardship programs in the United States, as well as provide insight into the future of product stewardship.

11:00: Rising Wave of Waste Management Strategies

Beyond Waste ~ Many communities are changing their approach, standing up to criticism, and removing barriers to increasing recycling and decreasing trash.  Michael Alexander, President of Recycle Away will present some of the strategies being implemented and a changing attitude that’s sweeping the country.

The New Business Model ~ Providing socially and environmentally responsible services to satisfy clients’ needs is the model that Aramark will present at NERC’s Conference.

2:15: The Wave of Waste Management Strategies (Continued)

Reinventing a State’s Approach ~ Progressive approaches to a State’s plan for increasing recycling is the topic that Resa Dimino, Special Assistant, Commissioner’s Policy Office, New York Department of Environmental Conservation will present during this session.  Ms. Dimino has been working on the New York Solid Waste Management Plan and will talk about the new energy towards moving recycling forward.

Local Solutions to Waste Management Issues ~ The number of independent state-based local government Product Stewardship Councils are increasing in North America. Lynne Pledger, Northeast Product Stewardship Organizer, Product Policy Institute will present the issues promoting the growth and interest in developing this grassroots approach to waste management.

9:30: Swelling Activities in Organics Recycling ~ Commercial & Municipal Activities Advancing Composting

Nantucket, Massachusetts, moved from solid waste crisis to having one of the most comprehensive solid waste management systems in the Commonwealth, with an estimated recycling and landfill diversion rate of more than 90%. Learn about Nantucket’s solid waste solutions, its unique partnership with Waste Options, Inc., and its state-of-the-art in-vessel co-composting facility. The Wilmington Organic Recycling Center (WORC) is a 27-acre source separated organics composting facility in Wilmington, Delaware, designed to receive an average of 550 tons/day of commercial food and yard waste. Explore compost operations from a business perspective and the novel residential and business partnerships required to make the facility successful. NERC’s Fall Conference will take place at the Hotel Northampton in Northampton, Mass.  Rooms are available at the hotel by calling 800 547-3529.  The discounted rates of $135 for a single and $145 for a double (plus tax) are available on a first-come, first-served basis until October 2. When making your reservation, refer to NERC to ensure that you receive the discounted rates.  Please note that reservations cannot be made online.  Reservations must be cancelled by noon one week before arrival to avoid charges.

Location

The Northeast Recycling Council, a non-profit organization, draws on more than two decades of professional service to promote a sustainable environment and economy.  NERC accomplishes this by addressing the relationship of source reduction, reuse, recycling and green purchasing to influence policy and create change.

NERC’s Board is made up of environmental agencies from Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.  Advisory Members include recycling trade associations, utilities, private businesses, consultants, and municipalities.

Exhibitor

NERC offers a limited number of exhibitor tables, located in the same room as the conference sessions.  In this way, exhibitors are guaranteed maximum exposure to all the attendees.  The $500 cost includes exhibit space (6’ x 3’) and registration for one person.  Table and electricity are available if needed.
